2012 NFL Survivor: Week 13

Last week:
DEN: W, 17-9
CIN: W, 34-10
IND: W, 20-13
NE: W, 49-19
CHI: W, 28-10
SEA: L, 24-21
TEN: L, 24-19
DAL: L, 38-31
ARI: L, 31-17

Can't run good forever. The blog's strong run ends, but hopefully some of you in smaller pools stayed alive with DEN or CIN. Only 6.3% of OFP was knocked out last week, bringing us to 4.0% of where we started.

Teams used: Eagles, Bengals, Cowboys, Texans, Ravens, Bucs, Giants, Bears, Packers, Patriots, Falcons, Titans.

This week's consensus numbers from OFP and Yahoo!:

San Francisco (at St. Louis; Safety Rating 7.50)

I'm not sure what is going on with the Yahoo! numbers at this point; there's just no way that many people are taking SF, considering how many have already used them. Regardless, their SR isn't all that high this week, and I still want to save them for next week (home vs. MIA).

Buffalo (vs. Jacksonville; SR 6.94)

The Bills are quite obvious this week, as almost any team would be when hosting the Jaguars. And they will likely be even more popular than the table above suggest, since so few people have taken them. Their SR is decent, but not much higher than comparable options which will be way less popular.

Dallas (vs. Philadelphia; SR 8.29)

Already used. Good option though, as most have already taken them and the Eagles are quite a mess at this point.

New England (at Miami; SR 7.66)

Already used. Could be a solid option in pools with only a few entries remaining.

Chicago (vs. Seattle; SR 6.38)

Already used. Can't see much of a reason to take them here.

Baltimore (vs. Pittsburgh; SR N/A)

Already used. May be a good option if Roethlisberger doesn't play (currently listed as Questionable).

Denver (vs. Tampa Bay; SR 7.53)

As usual, the Broncos are a strong option. As usual, I'm going to hold off on taking them, as their SR isn't anything unusual and I still want to save them for Week 16 vs. the Browns.

NY Jets (vs. Arizona; SR 6.69)

This is ugly, but the Jets have a decent SR, no future value, and won't be very popular. I'd take them here if not for an even uglier option below.

Green Bay (vs. Minnesota; SR 7.84)

Already used. If you still have them, this may be a good time to use the Packers, depending on your Week 16 options.

Carolina (at Kansas City; SR 5.85)

SR not high enough.

Detroit (vs. Indianapolis; SR 6.71)

Finally, we get to the Lions, the 11th most popular pick this week. And not surprisingly so, as a 4-7 team going up against a 7-4 powerhouse doesn't quite seem like a lock. But the Colts continue to not actually be very good, and the Lions' record underrates them (to use an overly simple metric, Detroit actually has a superior point differential).

Obviously Detroit is far from a lock, but I think taking the Lions here allows me to save very strong picks for Week 14 (San Francisco) and Week 16 (Denver). This week's pick is Detroit.

  1. Yahoo allows you to reset if everybody is knocked out. It also allows you to start a league whenever you want. So you are not looking at a public that all started week 1.

    1. Makes sense, had not realized that. Seems tough to get reliable consensus data at this point in the season.

  2. Vegas Watch-Thanks for your help so far!

Used your picks except for Denver instead of Tenn last week…

    ME: ARI-BAL-CHI-CIN-DAL-DEN-GNB-HOU-NE-NYG-PHI-TB
Here is what they have used thus far...

    Team #1- ARI-ATL-CHI-CIN-DET-GB-HOU-SFO-NEW-PIT-DAL-DEN
    Team #2- ATL-BAL-CHI-DEN-GNB-HOU-NYG-NWE-SD-PIT-DAL-CIN

Does this change anything or should I just go with the Lions this week?

Thanks for your help as always!

    1. I think I'd plan on Lions this week and then probably 49ers next week (I'm guessing #2 will take SF this week, but who knows).

    2. Thanks for the input. I will roll with the Lions.

    3. Hey Vegas Watch!

Thanks for the help this year...ended up splitting pool three ways...

One guy failed to make a pick (WTF?-and still managed 1/3 of pot)
      Other guy had Baltimore...

Thanks again...and looking forward to next year.

  3. Hi Vegas,

Our pool is down to 19ppl, from 320 at the start.

I have used the following: HOU, SD, CHI, DEN, NYG, ATL, MIN, GB, BAL,SF, NE, CIN

A few stats on our group: Everyone has used HOU and ATL; 17 ppl have used Dallas; 17 have used Green Bay; 16 have used Denver; 15 have used SF; 14 have used Balt; 14 have used NE; 9 have used Det.

Thinking of this week (plus down the road), I am thinking Dallas this week, followed by Seattle in week #14 (home against ARI), potentially Miami in Week 15 (home to JAX), TB in Week 16 (home to St L) and finally in week 17 (NO home to Carolina).

What are your thoughts (both this week and beyond)??

    Thanks!

    Daniel

    1. Dallas seems like a glorious pick for you this week. I'd wait to figure out the later weeks if/when you get there; those W14 and W15 picks are probably going to be pretty popular.

  4. Hi VW - Thanks for all your help this season. One of my entries is still alive in a pool that requires we start picking 2 teams this week, with 87 total entries remaining. If you miss both picks, auto-eliminated. 1 for 1 advances so long as no one else gets both picks right.

You talked some general strategy about this a couple weeks ago but I'm curious what you think given my picks thus far:

PHI, NYG, CHI, DEN, HOU, MIA, MIN, GB, DET, BAL, ATL, CIN

For this week I was going to roll with DAL and NE. Only about 15 other people could use that exact combo. Make sense? Should I mostly take the strongest 2 at this point and in coming weeks or plan some. I'd have SF and SEA avail for next week. Week 15 already looks like a mess for just about everyone. Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

    1. OOPS, just ran the numbers again and actually only 4 other people could use the DAL/NE combo this week.

    2. With 87 people left, it seems ridiculously unlikely that there won't be anyone who goes 2-0 this week, so I would just assume you have to get both right to advance.

I think you still do need to consider future value and popularity quite a bit. Dallas seems like it should clearly be one of your picks this week. For the other pick, I agree that you should save SF for next week, so I think it comes down to NE or DET. Tough, but I think I'd go with DET, since with so many people left (even with double picks), it seems like the Patriots have a ton of value in Week 16.

    3. Already used DET. Looks like NYJ is the closest comp. Would you use them over NE too?

      Delete
    4. My bad. Would probably just go with the Pats at that point.

  5. 26 peeps left. Only 4 people and myself have SF available. I have used similar picks as you but I do NOT have Detroit available. I gotta go with SF, right?

Small pool of 3... Only I have SF available. Like the other pool, I do NOT Have Detroit available. Take SF here too?

Thanks as always, truly appreciate it!

    1. SF works if you think you will be able to make a decent pick next week without having them available.

    2. Thanks! For week 14, perhaps Indy at home vs Tenn? Seattle at home vs AZ? Chicago at Vikings? TB at home vs Philly? Looks like some solid options you think and I should take SF now to be safe?

  6. VW -

1 of 2 left. I have followed you all year until last week when I took Denver. Other guy's best options this week are Det, NYJ, and Buf. Next week he will have TB and Seattle as options. Week 15 he would basically be shooting darts at the wall. Do I go Detroit, SF or SF this week and figured out next week later.

    Thank you,

    Luke

    1. I'd take the 49ers this week and then figure out next week when the time comes.

  7. 2 left out of 120.

    1) Hou Cin Chi Bal SF Atl GB Pit Dal NE SD Den
Me) Hou Cin Chi Bal SF Atl GB Pit Dal NE Phi Den

My guess is he'll go with the Bills. Do you see any value with San Diego down the road? I could match his picks until then if possible. Any thoughts? Thanks for your input as always.

    1. Impressive that your picks are so similar. I'd just take the Bills (unless DET or NYJ ends up having a higher Safety Rating). Chargers could help you in Week 17 (home vs. OAK), but seems unlikely that having them available will help you prior to that.

    2. He picked Detroit. Tough choice, Bills or Lions.

    3. I'd take the Bills but continue to monitor those two lines.

  8. Hey VW, 24 people left. I've still got SF left, but obviously want to use them next week instead. I've still got Baltimore. Assuming Big Ben is out Sunday (which is appearing very likely), would you use that pick over Detroit? I feel like they will be heavily favored if He's officially ruled out by tomorrow.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

    1. Yes, the Ravens will be a very strong pick if Ben does not play.

  9. Hi VW, it's Potato Kmish! Hey let me know your thoughts on my strategy. I have Niners, Packers Texans, Patriots still available on 2 very strong entries. I have double picks this week. I am planning to use Detroit with Buffalo and Detroit with Jacksonville thus creating 1 surviving entry which is guaranteed to be strongest entry left. Pool started with 4500 guys. Down to 250.

Are you a fan of utilizing Hari Kari to advance snd strengthen an entry?

(Nice to see you like Lions too!)

    Team 1
    Minnesota Vikings
    New York Giants
    Dallas Cowboys
    Denver Broncos
    New Orleans Saints
    New York Jets
    Oakland Raiders
    Chicago Bears
    San Diego Chargers
    Baltimore Ravens
    Atlanta Falcons
    Cincinnati Bengals
    Detroit/Buffalo

    Team 2

    Philadelphia Eagles
    Cincinnati Bengals
    Dallas Cowboys
    Denver Broncos
    New York Giants
    Miami Dolphins
    Minnesota Vikings
    Green Bay Packers
    San Diego Chargers
    Baltimore Ravens
    Atlanta Falcons
    Chicago Bears
    Detroit/Jacksonville

    1. Taking a six-point underdog in a Survivor pool does not seem optimal.

  10. Yes, but I forgot to mention an important factor in my thinking. We will not have double picks moving forward if Buffalo loses this week. if Detroit wins my one surviving entry is the strongest entry remaining in the pool no matter who wins the Buffalo/Jax game. Also, by definition if Jacksonville wins we have the big knockout and my pool will be single picks the rest of the year. I will be the only remaining player with Houston. GB and NE. If Buffalo wins I will have the highest pointspread favorites available for 3 straight weeks of double picks. Seems like a reasonable hedging strategy. In a sense i have a 68% chance of waking up Monday with the strongest entry remaining. I know I might be missing something but how else do I beat out 250 guys to be last man standing? How would you play my teams above using traditional thinking? Thanks VW.

    Entry 1

    Detroit/Buffalo
    San Fran/Seattle
    Houston//Miami
    Green Bay/Patriots
    Steelers

    Entry 2
    Detroit/Jax
    San Fran
    Houston
    New England
    Steelers

    1. And there is a 0% chance you wake up on Monday with two entries remaining.

  11. Agreed. But 1 strongest entry can win the pool. 2 very good entries likely split large pool at best.

Your point is well taken, though.

    How about:

    Team 1

    Detroit/New England
    San Fran/Seattle
    Houston/Miami
    Green Bay
    Pittsburgh

    Team 2
    Detroit/San Fran
    Seattle/Tampa Bay if needed
    Houston/New Orleans if needed
    New England/
    Pittsburgh

    Do you like this approach?

    1. I think you are overestimating the odds that the "strongest" remaining entry wins the pool.

      The revised plan seems reasonable.

  12. Thanks. I have a difficult choice to make. I sure would have regrets if either miami or st. Louis wins though. I have a feeling tomorrow is littered with upsets. If so, my first option will be more valuable.

  13. Amazing how SF killed so many survivor players this year. And Jim Schwartz should be shot.

  14. Schwsrtz should have been fired directly after the game. On 3rd and 5 with 2:00 left, no timeouts for Indianapolis, why not throw it to Calvin Johnson for a 5 yard slant and ice the game. What made him think that his pathetic defense would stop Andrew Luck when he scored so quickly for the first touchdown. Win with your two best players doing what they do best. Just awful
